Mining Acts review update
A series of documents have been publicly released summarising responses under consideration as part of the South Australian Government’s Leading Practice Mining Acts Review.
A nine-month community engagement process has been completed that sought the views of landowners, industry, regional communities, representative bodies, explorers and mine operators across South Australia to ensure that any legislative changes cut red tape, meet modern community expectations and prepare us for the future. In that time, the Review Team met with over 500 individuals, 60 organisations (some on numerous occasions) and held over 20 community meetings and information sessions.
Two Fast Facts documents provide a summary update of regional meetings and submissions received (the review process so far) and compliance in the regions, while 20 Policy Directions documents outline the key issues raised in submissions and explain how the Acts currently manage these matters, and the future policy directions being considered. These issues include, but are not limited to, transparency, landowner advice services, leading practice processes for changes to operations, protecting the environment, compliance, notification to landowners and access to justice. Over 130 submissions received have also been released.
The next stage of this important community conversation over the coming months will guide the Review Team as it considers legislative response to the many issues raised.
Key stakeholders – such as Grain Producers SA (GPSA), Livestock SA, Primary Producers SA, South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy (SACOME), AMPLA (Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association), Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC), Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia (CCAA) and the legal community – continue to provide encouraging engagement.
The Review Team will keep meeting and engaging with stakeholders, including members of Parliament, over the coming months to carry forward this conversation about South Australia’s mineral future which aims to ensure our legislation leads the nation.
