Leading Practice Mining Acts Review - Statutes Amendment Bill released

Premier Jay Weatherill tonight announced the winners of the Premier's Community Excellence Awards in Mining and Energy, at the South Australian Chamber of Mines and Energy Annual Resources Industry Dinner.

The awards, held at the Adelaide Convention Centre, acknowledge companies for their efforts in supporting communities, social inclusion, workforce diversity and environment excellence.

“Our resources sector is not only a major employer and contributor to our economy, but a sector that goes above and beyond to contribute to the wellbeing of communities, workplace diversity and social inclusion,” Mr Weatherill said.

“This State Government is fully behind the resources sector and I welcome opportunities like tonight’s awards to recognise the economic, social and environmental contribution of the sector to South Australia.”

The 2015 Premier’s Community Excellence Awards in Mining and Energy produced winners in three categories:

  • Excellence in Social Inclusion - Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd
  • Excellence in Supporting Communities - Kalari Transport Pty Ltd and Iluka Resources Ltd
  • Excellence in Leadership - Women in Resources – Oz Minerals Ltd

Mr Weatherill said Heathgate Resources was described by the judging panel as an outstanding example, as a result of the company’s work providing ongoing support to the Adnyamathanha people.

“This includes career programs, business development opportunities and mentoring, as well as a host of community programs and the development of an extensive system of family support,” Mr Weatherill said.

“For example, Heathgate Resources provides funds for transport services for the elderly and school children.

“It has also met and surpassed the target of 20 per cent Aboriginal employment in 10 years at its mine sites.

“In a joint application for the Excellence in Supporting Communities category, Kalari Transport Pty Ltd and Iluka Resources Ltd demonstrated the communications networks they have established have increased safety for all users of major roads within and surrounding Ceduna.

“Oz Minerals Ltd was recognised for its ongoing planned approach and initiatives to promote women within the company and beyond, by partnering with other resources companies to foster diversity.”

Commendations were awarded to:

  • Oz Minerals Pty Ltd (Excellence in Supporting Communities)
  • Fyfe Pty Ltd (Excellence in Leadership - Women in Leadership)
  • Terramin Australia Ltd (Environmental Excellence)
