Mining operation

Arrium operates open-cut mines in the Middleback Ranges producing both magnetite and hematite ore for steel production and export respectively.

Some is also shipped to Port Kembla and Newcastle New South Wales, in the form of blended fines and pellets.

Tenement information

The Middleback Ranges Project comprises of a number of tenements which are broadly considered under different Mining Areas.

Mining is undertaken in three areas with multiple pits, including:

  • South Middleback Ranges (SMR) Mining area

The deposit

Iron ore deposits comprising of magnetite and hematite found within the Middleback Ranges that forms part of the Cleve sub-domain of the Gawler Craton and is comprised primarily of Early Proterozoic metasediments of the Hutchison Group.

Approval process

Programs for environment protection and rehabilitation have been submitted and approved for each Mining area.

Note: Following amendments to the Mining Act 1971 which came into force on 1 July 2011, mining and rehabilitation programs (MARPs) were replaced by programs for environment protection and rehabilitation (PEPRs). Previously approved MARPs are now deemed to be PEPRs.
